Hi Alex,
You might want to try to either make a totally new xlsx file, then save as
HTML, or save an xls file as an xlsx file, then save as HTML, then compare that
with one that started out as an xls file, saved to HTML.

Most of my stuff is in xls but we do have a few xlsx files we are creating now.
