Hi,
I forgot to say I have done some work on a space invaders style game.
It's still in the early stages and has some bugs and very few features,
but you are welcome to the source if you want. It is going to be open
source. I am hoping someone will add graphics to it because accessible
games shouldn't be any different from any other game, just playable by
nearly everyone, not just sighted people.
Here's an example of a game written with pygame. Unfortunately it's not
open source, but it gives a good idea of what is possible:

There is a developement blog for the game too with a very small pygame
tutorial:

pygame is very well documented. I have a link to the mixer
documentation, very important for this kind of game:
http://www.pygame.org/docs/ref/mixer.html
If you do want the code for my game, contact me off list and I will send
it. Anyone else who wants it too.
