Thank you, Michael! The computer that finally died but used "floppy"
dics--those three inch ones that aren't really floppy at all--and luckily the
important information is backed up on those discs, not just lost. The computer
it needs to go on to is a windows something, circa 2010 I think. I will look
for an external disc drive with a slot for the floppy? Is that a possibility?

Hi Suzanna,
What kind of floppy are you talking about and what kind of computer operating
system? I just happen to be reading about Macs inability to read data from
the older 800K drives. The “newer” 1.4 MB disks have a better chance. If you
have the 1.4 MB, you could locate an external disk drive with a USB
interface. That should be able to be plugged into any modern computer and
then you can copy the data to a CD or USB sim card.
Your chances might be easier if you could find someone who has an old laptop
from around 1999. That’s when USB started getting standard but the computer
still supported floppy disks which could be an internal component of the
laptop. Some laptops had a slot that let you insert either a removable CD
drive or a floppy disk drive. A real miracle.
If you find an older computer, you can copy the data from the floppy disk to
the computer’s hard drive, but the challenge is then how to get that data off
the computer, especially if it lacks a USB jack. Maybe an old email program
could work. . .from what I’ve read, most web browsers from the 90s just don’t
work anymore, but perhaps I’m wrong. If the computer has an ethernet jack,
then you can connect it directly to a modern computer. If it has only a
telephone wire jack for old-style modems, then you are in for another
challenge.
Good luck on all of this. . .
