Thanks for the info. I've never seen a golden. But then again I've never seen
someone post a golden without there being a dozen different opinions on what it
is. Strangely enough, if I remember correctly the tail feathers while in
flight are used as a field mark because they're different than black bellied.
Maybe if y'all see it again tomorrow it'll fly for you.

pictures seemed to point to American Golden-Plover. If there is one thing
everyone seems to agree on it is that this is a Plover. It was a single
bird and found on a sod farm. This is a typical stopping off point for
Golden-Plovers in migration. It has been my impression that Black-bellied
Plovers tend to be mud-flat feeders rather than sod feeders (perhaps I'm
over-generalizing here). The range maps clearly show the migration range of
the Golden-Plover as a wide swath over the eastern portion of the country
including MS. And their breeding grounds look to spread out across the
northern interior regions of upper Canada and Alaska also indicating a
preference for habitats much beyond shorelines. One set of pictures might
not be diagnostic enough to be absolute on an ID. However, this species has
been sighted previous years at the sod farm where this bird was found.
All that being said, I am definitely no expert. It was just a "group" ID of
American Golden-Plover. If the pictures clearly indicate an ID of
Black-bellied Plover based on the bill, then it is a Black-bellied Plover.
I would defer to the expert.
