Have you considered a so-called "post installer" after a vanilla installation 
that does a check of what is supposed to be there and reports either "All 
components were found" vs. something like: 

The following necessary files/directorys were not found: 

1) whatever 
2) whatever 
etc. 

A sort of pre-flight check before take-off? Optional or unncessary things if 
found like docs and such could be listed as items that can be safely removed. 
Basically a look-over by you, in your absence, to make sure they have 
everything needed and in the proper place initially for a basic installation.
