I only have very limited info on this. I don't know if it would help, but most if not all of the backup software programs allow for USB support for backing up and restoring a drive image. I've done this before with programs like Norton Ghost. They use something like I think it's called "PC-DOS", which is in what the HD's image is restored, and it can used to restore the image from an external USB drive. So that allows USB use in (a manner of speaking) DOS. I believe for this to happen in any scenario, the mobo's BIOS would need something like "Legacy USB support" which (in addition to allowing USB 1.1) allows the mobo's USB ports to work outside of Windows. I have to enable that in my BIOS to use external USB HD enclosures outside of Windows. But if a mobo does not have that in its BIOS, that doesn't mean it won't work, it could generally mean Legacy USB support is always enabled. Look at this, USB support in DOS: http://www.bootdisk.com/usb.htm http://www.freedos.org/freedos/news/technote/203.html http://www.georgpotthast.de/usb/ That last link has a "Download" link AND an "Order" link, so I don't know if the download is limited or what. The download is http://www.georgpotthast.de/usb/dosusbd.zip . Here's some more links, this one talks about what I mentioned about Legacy USB: http://www.toolsthatwork.com/bbdocs/usb.htm This one mentions PC DOS used by Ghost: http://www.computing.net/answers/dos/usb-support-for-dos/15458.html And "Yes, there are USB drivers for DOS..." which may be what you've already found: http://www.theinquirer.net/inquirer/news/1046069/yes-usb-drivers-dos -Clint God Bless, Clint Hamilton, Owner www.OrpheusComputing.com www.ComputersCustomBuilt.com www.OrpheusComputing.com/cheap_reliable_web_hosting.html www.OrpheusComputing.com/PCworks-computer-help-email-list.html http://Computer-Hardware-Sales-Consumer-Electronics-Sales.com www.AdvancementsInMedicine.com www.Cloning-Research.com www.CuringDisease.com www.Dow-Jones-Stocks.com ----- Original Message ----- From: "Tom" Is there anyone on this list who has actually managed to get USB support to work in DOS? I've done a lot of searching and found a lot of different methods that supposedly makes USB ports accessible in DOS. I've tried a couple of them with no success. I'm not interested in third party knowledge, but only interested in someone who has really been able to do it. Sorry if I sound harsh or ungrateful for help from this list but I'm getting too old to go on a wild goose chase. That's why I am looking for firsthand information on the subject.
