You can use a thing called 'Escrow'..It needs both parties to be agreeable,
and for larger amounts, I'd have thought it makes lots of sense. 'Escrow'
acts as a 'Go Between' between you and the seller. You send your money to
the Escrow company, they inform the seller and the sellers sends the goods
to you. When it arrives, you contact the Escrow company, and they release
the funds.

For smaller amounts, a check on the sellers rating will normally tell you if
you should be buying from them
