Hi Hank, In this case, your friend is correct. In the standard place for entering the product key, there are five small boxes that can hold five alphanumeric characters in each. The installer automatically jumps from one box to the next as the entire 25 character string is typed, so he must not add the dashes himself. From your description, I am assuming that he is without sight. Since this is part of the XP install, I also must assume that no screen reader is running to help him through it. Does this mean his mother is the one typing in the characters? If not, see if he's willing to ask her to type them in when the install gets to that point. One other thought is based on how Windows keys are specific to the type of XP being installed (OEM, Retail, Volume Licensing, etc.). If he is a tech-type of guy, is there any chance that he may have modified his original install disk using utilities such as nLite, RVM Integrator, etc. that let you add &/or remove things from the install? While I doubt this would happen while doing normal tweaking of the OS in one of these, it's still theoretically possible that something was removed or added that changed the type of install from, for example, an OEM disk to a Retail copy. While the functionality of both disks would not be any different, an OEM key will never work on a Retail version of the XP install disk. If it is even remotely possible that he has done something like this, he'll need to go back and use the original install disk to at least get back into Windows where he can try some 'less intense' experiments with those types of utilities. lol Peace, Gman "The only dumb questions are the ones we fail to ask" ----- Original Message ----- From: "hank smith" <hanksmith5@xxxxxxxxx> To: <pctechtalk@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Monday, August 11, 2008 2:21 AM Subject: -=PCTechTalk=- question about installing windows xp > hello have a question. > I am helping a friend install windows xp pro > windows tells him his product key is incorrect how ever I had him confirm > with his mom who is sighted the key that he has written down in braille > and it is correct > he is not putting in the dashes do to the fact widnows automaticly moves > the spot for the next set of 5 sets of numbers and letters > am I correct or am I not should the dashes be in there should my friend > put the dashes in? > he says it does not need to be done I say it does need to be done > who is correct? > want to make sure I am giving him correct info because I don't even trust > my own info anymore this is so frustrating. > thanks > Hank --------------------------------------------------------------- Please remember to trim your replies (including this sentence and everything below it) and adjust the subject line as necessary.
