We are off subject for this group, but anyway, that had to be a horrible
experience. You certainly have my sympathy. In college, my name came up for
the dorm crisis hot-line. I showed up at 1:00am, puzzled as all get out,
and just asked "what the heck do you expect me to do?!" I can't even hear
over the telephone." "You can hear the telephone ring, can't you?" "yes, I
can, it is still not sinking in, sir. Try it this way. Teach me to read
lips over the telephone, and I will do this for you."

Phone rang, and I looked around for someone else to take it and someone
did. Then the phone rang again, second line. The guy looked at me, "answer
the phone, d*** it!" "Hello," I said. "Well, what did they say?" "I have no
idea. I can't hear- I read lips. That is what I have been saying all along."

He just stared at me. "You can't hear over the telephone at all? But you
talk!! You can't talk unless you can hear over the telephone!" I tried to
get HIM to take the phone, but was rebuffed with "Not my job." Then I heard
something strange- choking, coughing or gagging, I am not sure. I ignored
the supervisor and called the campus police, and explained I had no details
to supply to them but a call came from Room 423. They were there
surprisingly fast; and let themselves in the room. The guy stabbed himself,
it was too late, too much blood loss. That was the last night I ever worked
there, and from then on, my heart goes out to people who work under that
kind of environment.

Some people just can't comprehend that there are people who can talk over
the phone just fine, but can't hear.

Robert
