An almost impossible question to answer!!

It depends on several factors, the size, the resolution, number of colours,
optimisation.

If you are using a photo for use on the web, there is no point in going for
a resolution higher than 72 dpi (dots per inch), so if your image is
considerably more, then reducing it to 72 dpi will greatly reduce it's size.
However, if you are wanting to get a decent quality print, the resolution
needs to remain higher (And therefore, the file size will be far higher).

You can also 'optimise a jpeg.  I use Paint Shop Pro, and using the JPEG
optimiser on there, I can get a 5" square, 150 dpi image down as low as
about 50kb without it looking really bad.
