   I have not tried that John, but I expect that if it did work before I
reformatted the hard drive, then, logically it SHOULD work after the
reformat also.

These ideas may be inconvenient and may not get to the problem, but ...
Have you tried taking the printer to a friend's to try see if it will
install on their machine (it can be uninstalled easily), and have you
tried borrowing a friend's USB cable to see if that will let your
computer see your printer?  (Just in case one of those is faulty.)
