Hey Pat.... :) Hi lady! I have always used Norton Systemworks to "Optimize" my hard drives. Never have used XP.. so I am not real helpful there..... But, Since you asked the question, I decided to find the answer as I am a curious cuss.....lol! I went to Start Help and in the search box pressed Safe Mode It came up with two choices..and the second one was starting in safe mode. I clicked on that..and it gave a good instruction..print this before continuing... lol! Who can remember once they shut the puter off...lol! Any way.. it said to press: Start Shut Down..( On my puter it says Turn Off Computer) Then when the window pops up.... Choose restart. Then it tells you ...when you see..the question... which operating systems to start... press F8 over and over. It then asked the question and I could have chosen safe mode. I just chose to boot normally. So, hopefully this will work for you. Just start to press F8 sooner..(pressing and releasing...not holding it down) as soon as the blue screen is gone and press it till you see screen with choices... :) Hopefully this will work for you..... Just thought I would mention...I am running XP Home...and if you are..then it should be the same. I have never looked at XP Professional..... Let me know when you are all defragged. Just in case you are curious...the simplest definition of the difference between Defragging and Optimizing is... Defrag... puts related things together... so if you wrote a word doc a week ago..and another one today.. they are on two different places on the hard drive... and if you want to edit them..use them.. the drive has to go back and forth on the drive to access them.... (maybe you want to combine them...but anyway.. all word docs would be together....) Optimize.... Puts things in order of how often they are used. So if you use your graphics a lot..and your word program a little... and your Alchemy game the most... that is how Norton would rearrange them on the drive. These of overly simplistic samples..but..alas...I am a simple person.....lol! I am not sure my explanation is correct..but it is how I understand it to be....The optimizing seems to make the most sense to me... since I am a creature of habit.....lol!
