Hi Drummer,
check the Maxtor site you have a good support;

I have several Maxtor drives and have had no problem with them.

Mike..
Thanks for answering. My PC isn't quite that old. It's a Quantex Pent II
400ms with a 13GB hard drive, a Zip RW drive, and a CD (read only) drive,
from April of 1998.. It also has several USB 1.1 connections..
And I'm still wondering whether something that says (like the Maxtor ext=
 100
GB drive) "Requires Win98SE" would work with my Win98 set-up? Maxtor does
say it's drive is compatible with USB 1.1, so I'm wondering why it wouldn't
work? Would my setup possibly limit it out?

I want it because I require something inexpensive to dump my data on in
order to transfer to a forthcoming newer PC... The Maxtor is on sale now=
 for
$89, and I could also use it later with the new PC, whereas if I bought an
external USB Zip 100 meg drive ($50-$70) and used my 10 Zip disks to do the
job, I would prolly only use it once on the new PC as it would also have
CD/DVD RW capability...
Thanks,
drummer

Hi Drummer,
with Win 98 on that old a computer you will have to partition the hard=3D
drive to make it able to be seen.
http://www.bootdisk.com/txtfiles/hdd.txt
YOUR COMPUTER'S BIOS DATE PROBLEMS YOU WILL LIKELY HAVE
-------------------------------------------------------------
Leading up to August 1994. You may not be able to properly access hard
drives larger than 528 MB in size.
Leading up to February 1996. You may not be able to properly access hard
                              drives larger than 2.1 GB.
Leading up to January 1998. You may not be able to properly access hard
                              drives larger than 8.4 GB.

YOUR OPERATING SYSTEM LIMITATIONS
-------------------------------------------------------------
Windows 95 or 95A Your system will be unable to access disk
(v 4.00.950 or 4.00.950a) partitions larger than 2.1 GB. You can=
 divide=3D

larger hard drives into multiple partitions,
each 2.1 GB or smaller. If you have an older
BIOS, you may also be limited as to the
maximum size of your hard drive.

It looks to me like Win98 and Win98SE are enough alike so that some
addl hardware/software that requires SE should also work with Win98,
no? Specifically I'm thinking about the Maxtor 100GB external hard
drive (USB2.0 and USB1.1) that says on its box it requires Win98SE...

If I have Win98 with USB 1.1 support, will the Maxtor then work okay
for me on my old Quantex PC?
thanks,
drummer
