Go to Device Manager and see what sound hardware is listed under the Sound, Video & Game Controllers section. If the soundcard entry is not there, it will have to be reinstalled from CD. If the soundcard has a conflict, it's usually easier to remove it's entries (right-click/uninstall) from the list, reboot, and reinstall from CD.
