Automatic updates can be turned off.

Your machine's system probably has a way to find files on it.  Use
it to find "Acrobat Reader" (as versions prior to 6 are still
called), then open it (blank screen).

Use Ctrl-K or the Edit menu to open Preferences, then click on
Update in the left-hand column.

There should be a pulldown in the center of the box with "Check for
Updates:" to its left.  It'll probably be set to "Every Month",
which used to be quite the case until 5.1 came out.  Change it to
"Manually."

Click OK, then close Reader.
