This computer is about two years old, maybe a little less, and it came with Windows 7. My previous computer was an HP and it came with Vista. I sold that one to a friend when I bought the new one. I am using Windows Live Mail, but I also have an account with Live Mail through MSN. I have 6 GB of RAM and a 64-bit operating system. Hi Walt, Did you always have windows 7 on the computer you are having trouble with the mail program? Did you have Vista before on it? Are you using windows mail or windows live mail? Is it a newer computer or older? Do you know how much memory you have on the computer? Just curious. christy -----Original Message----- From: Christy Sent: Sunday, July 31, 2011 9:39 PM To: pctechtalk@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: -=PCTechTalk=- Re: Back From the Grave With More Windows Live Mail problems. Hi Walt, You can go to options in windows live mail and set it to compact sooner that every 100 times you close windows mail. Microsoft decided to handle the task differently, compacting folders automatically every 100 times you close Windows Mail. But there's still a way to make the app compact messages right away. Select Tools from the Options menu, click the Advanced tab, and click the Maintenance button. Find the line that says Compact the database on shutdown every [100] runs. Make sure that option is checked, change it from 100 to 1, and click OK, OK. When you shut down Windows Mail, it will offer to compact messages; click OK. Unless you want it to make that offer every time, the next time you launch Windows Mail, go back into the Maintenance dialog and set the interval back to 100?or to another interval, if you prefer. Christy and Dorothy mentioned compacting mail folders in Windows Live, but sad to say, I donâ??t know how to do that. Can anyone give me step by step directions? I would really appreciate it. I use those two AND left windows live running. That way I can always go there if missing something and dig around those 20,000 messages I don't think they ever leave. -----Original Message----- From: pctechtalk-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:pctechtalk-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of Sr. Dorothy Robinson Sent: Sunday, July 31, 2011 1:17 PM To: pctechtalk@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: -=PCTechTalk=- Re: Back From the Grave With More Windows Live Mail problems. Hi, Walt-- Just thought I would throw in my 2 cents worth. Never used Outlook or Windows Live Mail--but I have used Netscape and Thunderbird quite a bit in the past. With those two mail clients, compacting after deleting mail is important; otherwise, although you can't see the mail anymore, it's still taking up space. Even Trash needed to be compacted. I had many trials until I learned that. Just for what it's worth...
