Faythe, I solved this problem  by doing the same things you did, but instead
of 'restart' do a cold boot.  It took one or two times of shutting the
computer all the way off and then the password thing disappeared.  That's
how I did it and Lionel did it that way too and it worked.  HTH--Glo

well I have the simple things like for 98 , disabling the password request
by double click the control panels network icon & choosing windows logon in
the primary network logon box >
