I have just come through a similar situation. Due to a short, the SMPS power
supply in the cabinet started to malfunction and supply incorrect voltages
to the motherboard. This caused all sorts of errors to be reported including
not booting properly, freezing the keyboard/mouse and demanding software
updates. I would suggest that you replace the SMPS and see. Additionally my
motherboard hardware monitor (A utility supplied on the motherboard CD)
informed me that the motherboard was receiving 5.9-6.0 volts instead of 5
volts.
Hope this helps
Maninder
