JACK KAPICA Globe and Mail Update There's been little news about viruses over the past half year, but that doesn't mean the criminals have been quiet, says a noted Internet security company. The new threats, says F-Secure's Data Security Wrap-up the first six months of the year says the trend in malware is to continuously find new ways to deliver payloads secretively, and behind the lines of defence. Another trend, recognized earlier, has also picked up: fewer hobbyists are writing viruses, and more are being written by criminal gangs with a financial motive. This year — coincidentally the 20th anniversary of Brain, considered to be the first computer virus — saw the mobile malware count exceed 200. That's not a high number considering the PC viruses, but it's a growing trend nonetheless. As mobile phones become more like computers and offer the ability to make financial transactions, F-Secure says it's certain that the malware community will follow suit with new horrors. So far, damage from mobile malware has been limited. A significant trend, the company says, is the increasing use of "rootkits," essentially cloaking devices, which allow virus writers to enter a computer surreptitiously and do their dirty work undetected.
