Good
morning! All eyes were on Chancellor Merryl Tisch yesterday as she
announced what many had suspected: She plans to step down from the Board of
Regents in March. It appears to be the latest indication that we're
entering a new era of education policy in New York, and leaves room for
plenty of speculation about her successor and what the next few months will
look like in Albany. As Geoff tweeted yesterday, "A Tisch-less board is
hard to imagine." We'll be making sense of it here, so stay tuned.
- Sarah Chalkbeat reports Stories brought to you by Chalkbeat reporters Merryl
Tisch, NY’s education leader through Race to the Top era, will step down in
2016 During Tisch's busy tenure as Regents chancellor, New York adopted the
Common Core learning standards, overhauled teacher evaluations to account
for student test scores, and spent nearly $700 million in federal Race to
the Top funds. But the tide has been turning against her policies in recent
months, as she lost allies in Albany and elsewhere. *Read more.*

Regents
praise Tisch’s leadership, with an eye on what comes next Fellow Regents
praised Tisch's vision on Monday. But the collegial tone glosses over
divides that plagued the board in recent months on contentious issues like
state testing and teacher evaluations.

Meanwhile, Regent Roger Tilles says he feels like Paul Ryan. *Read more.*

City
to pay for all 11th-graders to take SAT during the school day The
initiative, which will cost the city an estimated $1.8 million per year, is
meant to free students from having to register for the test, request a fee
waiver, or travel to a testing site on a Saturday morning. New York City
now joins 70 school districts and 16 states that paid for students to take
the SAT during the school day last year.

“This is saying, we believe in you, we know you are ready to go to
college,” Chancellor Carmen Fariña said Monday. *Read more.*

When she steps down, it will represent the end of a turbulent period in New
York education policy during which the state adopted the Common Core
learning standards and overhauled teacher evaluations to account for
student test scores, sparking an anti-testing backlash but also coinciding
with rising graduation rates. *Chalkbeat
