Thank you too Gene. Trunkated dome strips have been a federal requirement whenever a renovation occurs since 2004, although the City has been ignoring that requirement in many instances. I recall discussions many years ago in the Access Board's Public Rights of Way Access Advisory Committee, the value of a smaller corner radius for the reasons you mention- slowing down turning vehicles, and permitting better pedestrian alignment with proper direction of crossing. My description of "bus bulbs" draws on the plans for 34th Street intersections. --- On Fri, 4/8/11, Gene Bourquin DHA <oandmhk@xxxxxxx> wrote: From: Gene Bourquin DHA <oandmhk@xxxxxxx> Subject: [passcoalition] Re: My concerns regarding 7th Avenue/23rd street safety improvements To: "PASS listserv" <passcoalition@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Date: Friday, April 8, 2011, 5:31 PM Thanks Ken, On your first two points, these were definitely part of what we sent to the D of T. On the third point, curb radius is usually determined by the existing infrastructure and the impact engineer what to make on traffic speed -- with wider radius allowing for larger vehicles to turn faster. Smaller radius also means shorter crossing distance. I am not sure about best practices, but I am sure the city is not planning on changing these corner, since they stated they won't even add the detectable warning which I believe need to be added since they are doing major work at the intersection. It is maddening that they are building major structures like medians yet will not fix the detectable warnings at curb cuts. The existing treatment has been proven ineffective and best practices says they must install DWS. It's as if they still have no ideas of the impact of these decisions and just blithely do what they want. On your last point, of course I agree, and I believe Lukas and Janet told us these are considered best practices, but since the information we have does not explain what the traffic plaza is or how it will be used, I'm not sure if this applies to any area with this intersections. But it very well could. #yiv1996431128 .yiv1996431128ExternalClass HTML {height:100%;cursor:text;} #yiv1996431128 .yiv1996431128ExternalClass {padding:3px;border:0px;} #yiv1996431128 .yiv1996431128ExternalClass .yiv1996431128ecxPlainText, #yiv1996431128 .yiv1996431128ExternalClass .yiv1996431128ecxHTML {font-family:'Lucida Console' !important;font-size:80%;} #yiv1996431128 .yiv1996431128ExternalClass P {padding:0em !important;} #yiv1996431128 .yiv1996431128ExternalClass BLOCKQUOTE, #yiv1996431128 .yiv1996431128ExternalClass UL, #yiv1996431128 .yiv1996431128ExternalClass OL {margin-bottom:0em !important;padding-top:0em !important;padding-bottom:0em !important;} #yiv1996431128 .yiv1996431128ExternalClass ecx* {text-indent:0in !important;} #yiv1996431128 .yiv1996431128ExternalClass SPAN.yiv1996431128ecxsquiggly {border-bottom:dotted 1px #f00;} Gene Dr. Eugene A Bourquin _____________________________ DHA, COMS, CI & CT, CLVT Support deafblind children in Guatemala!
