I just learned from a member of SAC that Phoenix will be replacing the existing
street lights with more energy efficient LED lights. However, apparently the
lights they've chosen stand to as much as double the brightness of our already
terrible light bubble. It is suggested that everyone jump on board and reach
out to their city council members to inform them about this problem. You can
find your city council member here:
https://www.phoenix.gov/mayorcouncil/find-my-council-district ;
The website is a bit quirky so be patient. From there you can go to the the
member's website and search for the contact instructions.
I'm at 56th St and Bell Rd in Scottsdale. I'm in district 2. If you're nearby
you can reach out to Jim Waring here:
https://www.phoenix.gov/district2/contact-district-2 ;
When you reach out to the council member, it may be helpful to mention the
International Dark Sky Association (IDA) guidelines for public LED lighting.
Their website explains the problem and provides guidelines for policy makers.
