My family has birded many times and seen the night sky through my telescope
several times over the last 15 years in the Portal area and throughout the
Chiricahuas. It is a dark sky area, and the Portal Cafe has good Mexican food
lunch and dinner and standard breakfast fare. My son Frank worked at the
American Museum of Natural History's Southwestern Research Station in Portal
for several years. He can tell you anything you want to know about the weather,
hiking trails ,dark skies, birding, roads, Rodeo, etc....
I feel it could make a great home for a birder and astronomer. However, it is a
4 to 5 hour drive from Phoenix. Take care, Sam

Village
I rented a house in Arizona Sky Village a couple of years ago. Stayed a week
with 2 friends. It's a beautiful area, and besides astronomers it's also
definitely popular with "real" birders (the ones whose camera lenses are larger
than most of my telescopes). You meet them at the Portal Cafe having
breakfast. Jack Newton of early astrophotography fame lives in ASV. However
it is not a "village", just a cluster of homes. No businesses but also no
lights. Closest store is Portal Cafe and grocery (5 minute drive), closest
town is Rodeo (pronounced "RO-dee-oh", not "ro-DAY-oh"), 20 minute drive. It's
not just dark, it's dark dark. And the Chiracahua Mts and the canyon are
indeed beautiful. :-)

Dear Terri Finch,
Are you looking for dark night skies? Our father was, and bought property in
Arizona Sky Village. There he found great viewing and an extraordinary
astronomy community. Dad has since passed away and his house and observatory
are now for sale. We wanted to let you know in case someone in your
organization (or the organization as a whole) is looking for a great place to
do some serious astronomy.
The Property
3 Bedroom/2 Bath house with 2 car attached garage, additional covered parking
and a 20’ x 30’ foot insulated/heated shop. 12’ x 12’ elevated observatory
with roll-off roof, power/data and a substantial 24” diameter isolated,
reinforced concrete pedestal. The 1600 sq ft move-in-ready manufactured home
was built with upgrades, including 2 x 6 construction and extra thick
insulation. The lot is 4 low-maintenance acres with fantastic views of the
Chiricahua Mountains and Cave Creek Canyon. See listing.
The Community
The property is part of the Arizona Sky Village, a community of active amateur
and professional astronomers and authors. Nearly every house has at least one
observatory, several have 2 or more. The elevation is near 4700 ft and the
local area is a Dark Sky Community. This, combined with mountains on both sides
of the valley, allows for very favorable viewing conditions. The Village has
both full time and part time residents. The nearby area is also famous for
birding opportunities.
