Hi Terry, I plan on attending but am having issues logging. I’d like to come without my scope so that I can observe how others do it. You have homework. And the homework is required for attendance. Part 1: I'd like everyone to send me 3 Messier Objects, that are visible from Dark to about 11:30pm on this Saturday night, that you'd like to see, that are at least 30 degrees above the horizon. When you send me your list of 3 objects you'd like to find and view, please include the time they are visible and how far off the Eastern or Western horizon they are, at that time. Example: (I"m making this up, not giving you something accurate) Let's say one of your objects is M13. And for this example I found it to be visible about 10pm and to be about 85 degrees off the Western horizon, meaning it is past the zenith and headed West, to set. I would send this object in a list to Terri as: M13: 85 Deg off W horizon at 10pm. Part 2: Take notes on some info you can find out about each object. Jot down about 5 facts to share with the group. I know there will be repeat objects among the members, but the goal is to end up with some new facts about each object, that we share. So, if all your facts are mentioned during the class, you can skip reading them to the group. But jot down 5 facts for each object, and make the facts you would share with the public like distance, size, brightness, etc. Do not supply the facts list to me. Bring it with you to discuss at the event while viewing the object. Part 3: Bring your favorite Books, charts, and other resources for finding objects in the night sky to share with the group. We will be discussing these type of ways to find the objects of interest. If your favorite way to find most objects, not just Messier Objects, is with your tablet, plan to show the group an example of how you do it. If you have a favorite book or star chart, bring it along. The questions we want to answer this evening are: * What objects are in the night sky during the time we are viewing this Saturday from Sundown to 11:30pm? * How do I find them, star hopping, using a chart, using Google Sky on your phone, etc. Discuss many ways to do this so that there are a lot of options open to everyone. * Cost of buying the book, chart, App, etc. This night is dedicated to learning to star hop to find Messier Objects, learning to use star charts and other resources to locate really awesome things to look at, maybe even discussion on how to plan your evening of viewing. We had a guest speaker come talk to us about doing just that, not too long ago. Planning the evening is better, if you want to see a lot of objects in one night, than just going out to the location, not knowing what is availbe, and then looking for objects. However, not everyone has the time to do that, so some of us, look for objects when we get there, and we have to have resources to make that happen. If you haven't already signed up to attend this class, do so soon. We might be closing it if there are too many scopes for Mike's location. We can fit 12 comfortably... that's what we have done in the past. We have 9 scopes so far and 2 maybe. Here's the link to RSVP to attend this class: http://www.pasaz.org/forums/calendar.php?do=getinfo <http://www.pasaz.org/forums/calendar.php?do=getinfo&e=1321&day=2014-6-28&c=2> &e=1321&day=2014-6-28&c=2 RSVP closes on June 28 at 3pm. And if you haven't signed up for Perfect Potluck, please do that as well, because we want to have a satisfying meal. It is required that everyone attending the potluck bring a main dish or side dish, no exceptions. Bring enough to feed 10 people a nice size portion of your food. 1 Casserole dish the average size of 9" x 11" feeds about 10 people if they all take a scoop. 2 pizzas can feed 10 people + if everyone only takes 1 piece and the extras are taken after everyone has had a chance to grab 1 slice. If you don't bring food, don't eat any during the potluck time. Sunset is 7:42pm ish We will be setting up our telescopes about 7:30pm The potluck is at 6pm. Here's the potluck link: http://www.perfectpotluck.com/meals.php?t=FGCH0759 Please remember, this is a class, and therefore it is requested to leave a $2 donation per attending telescope, in Mike's Star Party fund. If you aren't bringing a telescope but still attending to view through the scopes, we request a $1 donation for attendance. We want Mike to continue to hold these type of parties at his home, so donate so that he can do it. Let's have a great observing time. I need my Weather Watchers to send me updates on Saturday's weather. I haven't seen any problems with the weather. I will be watching again tomorrow morning. Should you see anything that will mess up this observing session, other than high heat, send it my way. The deadline to get your 3 Messier Object list to me will be 3pm tomorrow, Friday, so i have time to compile a list based on when the objects will set, so that we might be able to view all the objects that are on the list. Hope to see you there! Sorry this took a bit to get to you. And thanks to Eric for reminding me I needed to send out the homework for this class. Additional info of interest: Times are approximate Moon is visible from 7:30 and sets 8:25pm Jupiter is visible from 7:40 and sets 8:40pm Mars is visible at 7;40 and up past 11:30pm Saturn is visible at 7;40 and up past 11:30pm Dark is about 9pm Terri, Event Coordinator for PAS PS: Each Telescope Training Session, we try to share something different. If you miss one, you might miss something important, but we might also repeat the info shared. If you have a request of what we should cover in one of the training sessions, let me know, so I can schedule it. Plans: Once dark has arrived, I'd like to have Eric take us on a sky tour. -- Good friends are like stars. You don't always see them, but you always know they are there.
