Hi all and happy hump day, and mexican flag day to everybody. Sonny
james, legendary country singer, died on Monday, yet, I didn't hear a
peep on the news about it, and he was 87, but that's all I know at this
time, I didn't get any messages regarding any passings today, so, in
his memory, back to 1964, and I think this bubbled under, but it got as
high as number six on the country chart, it's from the you're the only
world I know album, and that song did chart, but this song is called
baltimore, so thanks to Mississippi Mike for sending it, and he
recalled in his message to me, that five years ago, he was fishing in a
cd bin at wal-mart, and there were lots of cd's he hadn't heard of,
until he came upon the best of sonny james. Today is Mexican flag day,
and I know that, because on Thursday, February twenty-fourth, 1994,
when x e m b c in Mexicali was doing a zona type format, when I would
get them right at sunset, before k e x in Portland Oregon would bomb
in, and this disc jockey named Ernesto was on there, and he mention dia
de la bandera, which means flag day, and the sad thing about x e m b c
was that in addition to wanting an aircheck, to which this girl on
q-96, the top 40 station down in the imperial valley was working for at
the time, named rikki Diaz, was rather brusk with me about, and she
commented, oh, I have a social life, etcetera, and I sent the mailer
with a cassette to her, and never got it back, but also, it seemed that
right when proposition 187 dealing with illegal aliens was passed, in
the election of 1994, the very next day, x e m b c changed format to
salsa, and I even tried calling down there to see if one of the people
would send me a tape of their station, but it seems as though, their
attitude was, your music is for us hispanics, so get out of here
gringo, and I sadly had to conclude that it seemed as though, Mexico
hates the United States, which is sad, because I've always liked the
hours that x e x x in tijuana would have, where they would play the
current music we enjoy, with spanish commercials, and they usually
would have that between six and seven in the evening on the week days,
and one of the hosts I remember, in 1971 was a person named felix
