Amy Murphy: Who as "The Chicken Lady," has become a friend to the homeless.

In 2013, Amy of Greensboro, North Carolina saw a newspaper story showing a
group of hungry homeless men in a tent camp, trying to keep warm in the cold
of night.
She thought, "surely there is something I can do" to help them. Here is what
she did:
Amy went to a Church's Fried Chicken restaurant, and asked if they ever had
uneaten chicken they throw in the trash.
As with many restaurants, the answer was yes. The prior night they'd thrown
away 40 pieces of chicken, and at the end of most nights, they have wasted
chicken.
Amy said, "well, could I have it? I mean we could give it to the people."
"And he [a manager] goes, yeah, you can have it."
So on Monday nights, Amy started what has become a gathering of homeless
people as other people join with Church's in making food donations, in a
buffet setup by volunteers.
Within 15 minutes, tables are set up, food is donated and the line begins,
as people eat together and share their stories as one big community.
And if that Church's restaurant doesn't have enough leftover chicken, they
cook more to donate.
On Mondays, Amy puts on a chicken hat, and prepares for that night's
activities. The silly hat adds a touch of humor to the evening's activities,
and is symbolic of her work.
But she never views it as feeding the homeless, "I'm feeding my friends."
"Feeding the homeless sounds like you're not the same not part of the same
community."
"I care about these people," Amy added. "I care what happens to them. I
celebrate their joys. I feel like a part of their lives. They are part of
mine."
