I assume you all saw Marshall Iliff's note about winter ospreys in the NE and Midwest. Of course we do get a few here in the winter, but should we filter them and ask for details? He has a point about 4th year Bald Eagles, having a stripe through the eye. I personally validated a record from Ankeny, but now I wonder if writing to the reporter for more detail would be a good idea, given his notes: "Large all brown raptor, with obviously white head and contrasting dark eye stripe. Seen from about 500+ m through scope at 60x but face pattern was very clear and distinctive". (http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist?subID=S16074678) There is also a report from Basket Slough without details. I recently loosened the filter for Linn and Marion Counties, to 1 from October 1st to March 8th. I did that in response to a good observer's report of an early November Osprey on the Willamette River, when I realized it would not be filtered in Polk County, but only Marion and Linn. I did manage a photo of the one yesterday in Stayton, and embedded it in the checklist: http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist?subID=S21524052. Perhaps it isn't a big problem, since there really aren't very many reports of ospreys in the Willamette Valley away from the Eugene area. I am considering resetting the filter for Linn and Marion back to zero for the winter, though, since we do have so many Bald Eagles. We have to strike a balance between being too rigorous and being too user-friendly. Let me know what you think, Jeff
