SGADEF file?

hi all,

I have a question (may sound silly to some of you) :

1. what are the different ways of checking if an oracle instance is up and
running or not?
2. what is the use of "sgadef" file and what is the location of this file on
unix box? If this file is supported in oracle 8i and later or not?
