I am trying to squeeze a new database onto a server but it isn't working
(which precipitated the email). My initial thought was 1GB but I seem
to remember 512M was sufficient for 10g (or was that 9i) but I couldn't
find anything that specifically said "the absolute minimum to install an
oracle database is x".

That's not an easy question because it all depends on how your database
is going to be used. Per the install guide, I believe 11.1 says "at
least 1GB". So that would imply just to install a database you need "at
least" one gigabyte. If your database is not doing very much that may be
plenty. I've seen some very small 11g database operating just fine with
1GB SGA. However, I've also seen some databases that require a minimum
of 64GB.
