Paul,
the fix was per one of your recommendations.
This was new hardware then a 13 gig oracle import onto win 2003 oracle 9*
system.
Per Paul, I replaced the deprecated analyze with the gather_schema_stats
tool which changed my application process from 20 minutes to 2 minutes.
