A friendly netiquette reminder

List,

It seems that we are generating a lot of traffic on freelists.org's
server, a lot
of it unnecessary. Many posts are going to this list with a few lines of
content
and a lot of lines of quoted material.

This is unfriendly to inboxes and recipients mail servers, but especially
unfriendly
to freelists' servers. Each one of the messages on this list goes out to
900+
subscribers, so it does add up.

To our credit, some of you are very good about including only relevant
quoted
portions of a post you are replying to.

I am setting quoting limits on the list, which will be effective
immediately.

quoting-line-reset = 15
quoting-max-percent = 50
quoting-tolerences-lines = 15

See below or on freelists.org for an explanation of these parameters.

What happens if your post becomes subject to over-quoting limits?

It gets sent to the moderator for approval. Approving over-quoted emails
will not be very high on my list of things to do, so you can likely deduce
that
it may take a little longer for a moderated post to get to the list.

Thanks,

Jared

quoting-line-reset

If quoting-limits is on, should the count of quoted
lines be reset if the user places their own text in
the message? (This has the effect of making it so that
quoting-max-lines is the total number of lines that
can be quoted at once IN A BLOCK, instead of in the
 entire message.)

quoting-max-lines-value

If greater than 0 and quoting-limits is true, this
is the maximum number of lines allowed to be quoted from
 a previous message.

quoting-max-percent

If greater than 0 and quoting-limits is true, this is
the maximum percent of the message allowed to be quoted
from a previous post.

quoting-tolerance-lines-value

If greater than 0, this is the number of lines that
must be exceeded in the total message before the quoting
percentage limit will be applied. It would be silly to
have a 25% quoting limit and have a three-line message be
rejected because two lines were quoted.
