Yes try VLC. I has opened about everything I have tried. Also make sure the
file extension is correct, ie, .mp4 or other.

With this, you should at least be able to open it & see what type of CODEC the
video is encoded with.
Did you try opening it in QuickTime Player? (at the mention of iMovie, i am
assuming you are on a Mac)

I have a 1.43 GB MPEG-4 surgery video file that will not open. Trying in
iMovie, the file is grayed out and will not highlight, and a message box
appears saying "Nothing to Import: You selected a directory to import, but no
importable movies were found inside. Please select another directory or file."
Trying on a PC with Windows Media Player, the message box says "Windows Media
Player cannot play the file. The player might not support the file type or
might not support the codec that was used to compress the file."
When I copy the file to a USB, it takes about five minutes, so it seems that
there is 1.43 GB of data being transferred, and not just an empty file labeled
1.43 GB.
I would expect MPEG-4 to be a common file format.
Any suggestions from the Optimal experts?
Thanks.
