Gary- I believe it was both- short stature of some, and definitely a Big
Talented ( also friendly) Giant! What a crew

I recall that shoot Tim. They used that image to highlight a story about the
photo dept for the Scheie Newsletter. Great memories. Thank you for sharing.

The OPS and the ophthalmic imaging community was well represented at Bill’s
memorial. Libba Affel, Jim Soque, Beth Ann Benetz, Laurel Weeney, Sara Morales,
Jim Berger and myself were there. It was a wonderful, bittersweet celebration
of Bill’s life. Bill‘s home was jammed full of his artwork, wood sculpture,
furniture and tons of photos of Bill.
Here’s one of Bill and his photo crew from sometime in the mid-late 80’s. The
negatives were taped to the back of the proof sheet and I wanted to borrow
them, but thought it inappropriate to ask now. Maybe later we can get our hands
on some of Bill’s photos and digitize them for posterity!

Great stories Tim! We share some great times with Bill, don't we?
Yes Ol' Cap (as he would call people from time to time) was an incredible man
to work for. I consider myself extremely fortunate to have had my career begin
at Scheie Eye under Bill's supervision. I started out as a darkroom
technician, developing FA films (remember film?), proof sheets, typical dark
room stuff. I soon learned that Bill was the master of contraptions... not a
full blown Rube Goldberg, but slightly reminiscent. He had a special darkroom
light setup he devised that hung from the ceiling... he made a special external
camera setup using a movable stand typically used with a 4x5 studio camera,
complete with an attached lighting system. If there was a way to make life
easier or improve the quality of work, Bill would surely come up with a way to
do it.
His skills and knowledge were unsurpassed. He was an incredible teacher and I
will always be indebted to him for taking a chance and hiring me so long ago.
Rest in peace 'Cap, you will be missed.
Gary

Good one John! Anybody who spent much time with Bill knew he could (and did)
fall asleep just about anywhere. At my first AAO meeting, Bill fell asleep in
the hotel lobby while we were waiting to meet someone for dinner. I left him
there snoring, went to the bar & had a couple of beers and came back without
him even knowing I was ever gone! The same thing happened the next night and I
met someone for a job interview and when I came back, Bill was still snoring
away. I guess that brilliant minds need to rest more….
A few years ago I invited Bill to speak on digital imaging at a regional
meeting I organize for technicians & photographers. Bill sent me his slides in
advance and I cringed. It was all about the math of digital imaging. There
wasn’t a single photo in the slide deck, just text slides! Who would show up to
speak at a photography meeting and not include a single photo? Bill, of course.
And he knocked it out of the park!
I had the privilege of working with Bill for ten years and learned a ton about
the technical side of photography from him. So sad that he didn’t have more
time to enjoy a well-deserved retirement.

Bill was the first OPSer I met in person. We shared a room at AAO, San
Francisco, 1997. He sensed my newbie jitters and put me at ease quickly,
checking in with me throughout the meeting to make sure I was having fun and
absorbing all I could. All qualities of a good and decent man, and a heckuva
teacher.
He was legendary in another way: I learned in those few days of room-sharing
that Bill Nyberg could snore the paint off the walls!!
RIP, my good man!

Bill was an outstanding individual. His knowledge of photography was without
equal. We worked together on the BOC and he always had great insight in solving
our most pressing issues. His lectures at the annual meetings were some of the
best. He was always a great resource and will be greatly missed.
