a CPU inside? The device simply monitors the channel the set is tuned to, and

info to whoever is doing the analysis. What exactly is ATSC 3.0 adding to

the ATSC tuner to the manufacturer, or that this data is being reported to
broadcasters?
Do you have any evidence that these connected TVs can determine what channel
the external Set Top Boxes used by more than 70% of U.S. homes are tuned to? If
the manufacturers can monitor this information, do you have any evidence they
are reporting this data to broadcasters?
The reality Bert, is that you are talking about a feature that does not
currently exist - as far as we know - a feature that will require manufacturers
to add this capability and any privacy protections that consumers and
regulators may require.
By the way, I still cannot figure out how to disconnect my LG TV from my WiFI
network...

How else would a mobile device tune to an ATSC 3.0 broadcast.
And then there is the minor issue of getting ATSC 3.0 chips into
mobile devices:
Why? We have already read articles describing mobile devices that have ATSC
1.0 *and* ATSC 3.0 built-in reception.
Prototype devices from manufacturers with IP in the ATSC 3.0 standard.
I'm talking about ATSC 3.0 reception by a smartphone or tablet.
OBVIOUSLY it will be possible to build mobile ATSC 3.0 receivers Bert. No doubt
there will be ATSC 3.0 chips.
But we are facing the same challenge that has existed since the ATSC 1.0 mobile
standard was approved: If you build it will they come?
It is HIGHLY UNLIKELY that ATSC 3.0 reception will be added to smartphones and
tablets. But devices that receive ATSC 3.0 broadcasts and make them available
over in-home WiFi networks could provide a means for mobile devices to access
these broadcasts.
The only credible impediment is the service providers, not the electronics.
The service providers have a habit of disabling what might conflict with
their "business model."
Service Providers? THe service providers are the broadcasters Bert. To date
they have had ZERO success getting ATSC chips into any electronics that matters
Bert.
They did get ATSC receivers in every TV sold in the U.S. - no more than 20% of
these TVs are being used to watch FOTA broadcasts. There will be no tuner
mandate for ATSC 3.0.
Broadcasters are going to be forced to do something they have NEVER done.
Create the new broadcast infrastructure AND convince electronics manufacturers
to build receivers into their products. I have little doubt that we will see
new TVs with ATSC 3.0 tuners; they may be optional from some manufacturers or
standard from others that have IP in the standard.
It will be interesting to see how this plays out, and if the broadcasters have
the ability to create a viable market.
