[opendtv] Mark's Monday Memo - 2004 April 5

  • From: Mark Schubin <tvmark@xxxxxxxxxxxxx>
  • To: Multiple Addresses Suppressed <tvmark@xxxxxxxxxxxxx>
  • Date: Mon, 05 Apr 2004 23:23:20 -0400

- Follow-ups:

     - Percentage of factory TV sales that are "DTV" - In the previous
two memos, I neglected to change the word "eighth" in the number of
weeks to "ninth" and "tenth." The figures are accurate for the same
period as all the other figures posted that week.

     - ATSC and Mexico - The notice was erroneously posted to the ATSC
Forum web site. According to Robert Graves, who chairs the ATSC Forum,
"all of the government and industry parties that have a stake in the
issue have signed on to the DTV policy, which includes adoption of the
ATSC Standard, BUT IT IS NOT YET OFFICIALLY APPROVED" (his emphasis).
"I apologize to you and your readers for being the source of less than
fully accurate information."

     - Broadcast flag - Its primary function is to prevent Internet
retransmission, because, as everyone knows, sharing of music files over
the Internet has hurt CD sales. But what if everyone is wrong? Today's
New York Times covers a study by two economists indicating that file
sharing has had essentially no effect (about as much as "rounding
error") on CD sales. Their findings are, of course, being disputed:

     - Advanced codec standardization and licensing - Peter Brown has a
couple of background articles in Via Satellite:

          - Neither the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) nor the
National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) updated their lists since the
last memo.

Scheduled End of Analog Television Broadcasting":

- Tech-Notes #124 has come out. It has extensive discussions of
translators (did you know the Salt Lake City market would drop from 36th
to 43rd if its translators weren't counted?). It also notes that at
least one U.S. TV station is still operating on a 1952 transmitter:

- A reader said I should write up last week's "Salome" HD shoot at the
Metropolitan Opera, and it WAS a little interesting, so I will. As far
as the Met was concerned, it was supposed to be a pretty straightforward
shoot: eight cameras (all with long lenses), six recorders, the usual
intercoms, ringdowns, VHS and DVD recordings, etc. The problem was that
CBS had booked just about every large HD truck in the U.S. to shoot golf
in Augusta, Georgia. We did our first shoot day (four-camera look-see)
in All-Mobile Video's Resolution, a perfectly fine HD truck. Then it
left for Augusta to handle the back nine holes.
We considered building a facility in the Met for the other two
days, but the opera house didn't have sufficient room that they could
give up for the needed time (the Met does seven different performances a
week and rehearsals of yet other operas during the day; there's a LOT of
scenery moving in and out all the time). We considered a little truck,
but it was problematic for all the production personnel involved. At
the front bench, we normally have the usual TD, director, and AD as well
as a score reader so the director can see where he is. We were
recording four switched isos, one switched by a producer. We just
couldn't fit everyone in.
So, what we ended up doing was using NHK Enterprises USA's little
K1 truck for video and HDCAM tape and AMV's Endurance truck for the
control room and VHS/DVD recordings. We added extra portable HDCAMs to
K1 to cover the recordings. We downconverted camera and tape outputs
for the Endurance monitor wall and installed two 20-inch HD monitors
there (we also installed two 20-inch HD monitors in K1's video area,
which normally uses 14-inch ones). We remoted the production switcher
head and installed it in Endurance after removing the normal head. We
also remoted some router heads and aux-bus switchers. In-house HD (to
the LD) came from NHK; SDI and NTSC came from Endurance. There was a
lot of tally, intercom, phone, power, and audio/video cabling between
the trucks.
It all went VERY smoothly, thanks to the AMV and NHK personnel.
Our biggest problems were parking and the ringdown phones. In a
two-hour wrap Saturday night we even managed to rebuild both trucks and
get the cameras and lenses on their way to Augusta. Thanks to all!
Now, if we can just get an air slot and permission to run the nude
scene....

- International H/DTV news:

     - Research firm In-Stat/MDR says that "currently, just over 4
million worldwide TV households receive and watch HDTV programming."
They say, "Japan is leading the HDTV charge with over 2 million
households receiving and watching HDTV programming. The US is second
with just over 1.5 million households." Curiously, they say, "HDTV
service remains extremely limited in its reach, with only four countries
offering the service beyond an experimental basis. These countries are
Japan, the United States, Canada, and Australia." That leaves out South
Korea:
<http://www.instat.com/press.asp?ID=925&sku=IN0401241MB>

     - The number of HD households in Japan would appear to be a matter
of some dispute. The Singapore Times reported today that "in Japan,
some 6 million consumers already have HDTV sets":

Industry opposed analog shutdown by 2010; 38% agreed:

name them:

- For the sixth week in a row, the Consumer Electronics Association
(CEA) has reported no factory-to-U.S.-dealer sales of (supposedly)
non-H/DTV projection TVs; when it hits 10 weeks, I'll assume the
category is dead and stop reporting it. VCRs were down 67.7% for the
first 11 weeks of 2004 compared to the same period in 2003. Direct-view
was UP 2.3%. Due to a peculiarity involving CEA's reporting in 2003 and
the way I do my ten-week averages, I can't report one this week; I
should be able to do so next week.
So-called "Digital Television" sales to U.S. dealers for the
eleventh week were 75,953 units. For the first 11 weeks of the year,
they were 794,994 units. "Digital Televisions" (most of which are HDTV
displays without DTT-reception capability) again accounted for about
14.7% of the TVs (not counting plasma or direct-view LCD) sold to U.S.
dealers so far this year. It may be worth noting here what that means.
Over 85% of the TVs sold so far this year were still plain non-H/DTV
direct-view TVs with picture tubes.
To qualify as a "Digital Television," a display need only be
capable of dealing with at least 480p; it need not be capable of either
receiving digital signals or displaying them. Devices actually capable
of receiving DTT signals were still a small fraction of those numbers.

- Ads for set-top DTT receivers: I'm aware of the Hughes at Circuit
City and Ultimate and the Samsung at J&R.

- The ads - My Los Angeles correspondent called the Mitsubishi at Fry's
an HD "upgradeable" unit, which doesn't jibe with the model number.
