Casio, Fujitsu Make Phone Digital TV Receiver Chip-Nikkei November 30, 2004 12:00am Source: Nihon Keizai Shimbun America, Inc. Nikkei English News: TOKYO (Nikkei)--Casio=20 Computer Co. (6952.TO) and Fujitsu Ltd. (6702.TO)=20 have jointly developed a high-performance OFDM=20 (orthogonal frequency division multiplexing)=20 demodulation chip for reception of terrestrial=20 digital broadcasts by cellular phones, the Nikkei=20 Business Daily reported in its Tuesday edition. The new signal reception chip is more than 100=20 times as sensitive as devices made to date,=20 enabling even people on speeding trains to=20 receive and watch digital television broadcasts=20 on their phone screens. Digital TV broadcasting for phones is expected to=20 become available in the first quarter of 2006, so=20 Casio and Fujitsu aim to have a commercial=20 product ready in time for this. The plan is to make the new chip available first=20 to Casio Hitachi Mobile Communications Co. and=20 possibly to other handset makers later on. A conventional OFDM demodulation chip analyzes=20 signal frequency and strength to compensate for=20 signal loss. The new chip also analyzes data=20 along the time axis, correcting the waveform as=20 the receiver passes through the shadows of=20 buildings or moves closer to or farther from=20 broadcast antennas. The circuitry also has a=20 function to adjust the tuner to pick up the=20 optimal signal when signals reflect off=20 buildings, and a supplementary antenna that=20 controls the directionality of the primary=20 antenna for reception of a stronger signal. Casio designed the chip incorporating these three=20 extra features, and Fujitsu added memory and=20 peripheral circuitry to obtain a single-chip=20 solution. <<Nikkei English News -- 11/29/04>> << Copyright =A92004 Nihon Keizai Shimbun America, Inc. >> ---------------------------------------------------------------------- You can UNSUBSCRIBE from the OpenDTV list in two ways: - Using the UNSUBSCRIBE command in your user configuration settings at FreeLists.org - By sending a message to: opendtv-request@xxxxxxxxxxxxx with the word unsubscribe in the subject line.
