- Follow-ups:

     - The DTT-receiver project - Twelve consumer-electronics manufacturers
responded to the request for quote from the Association for Maximum Service
Television (MSTV)/National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) for a cheap and
good DTT adapter (set-top box):

     - Los Angeles HD shoot - We're shooting at the Wiltern Theater until
Friday night. If you want to stop by and see the AMV Resolution facility, it's
parked behind the theater. Afternoons should be good.

     - July 1 - I'm on the road again, so I haven't been able to check all the
New York papers.
          - This week I've listed 91 advertised TVs 36-inch or larger. Of
those, 45 (49%) have integrated DTT-reception capability.  As of July 1, 100%
of those manufactured in or imported to the U.S. were supposed to have
integrated DTT-reception capability. I've also listed 54 advertised TVs
between 25- and 35-inch. Of those, two (4%) have integrated DTT-reception
capability. As of July 1, 50% of those manufactured in or imported to the U.S.
were supposed to have integrated DTT-reception capability.
          - See also the ads section for inexpensive non-integrated sets that
are HD and/or widescreen.

retailers, so look for their phone numbers at the bottom of the memo.

     - May 1 - None of the lists I check were updated in the last week.

- HDNet is offering free downloadable 20-minute HD clips of the Space Shuttle
launch:
<http://www.hd.net/downloads

- The USC Entertainment Technology Center Digital Cinema Lab is offering a free
digital screening of "The Island" at the Hollywood Pacific Theater on Monday,
August 22, at 7 pm. Check the site for further information:
<http://www.etcenter.org/>

- International H/DTV news:

     - According to The Business, the BBC is creating a UKP 400 million (over
$700 million) fund from its license fees to help "vulnerable groups" make the
transition from analog to digital (i.e., subsidizing reception equipment and
installation):
<http://tinyurl.com/8p89w>

     - The BBC is also reportedly funding the development of "Pandora," a
PVR-like box that would capture a week's worth of EVERYTHING transmitted on the
Freeview DTT service, so users will be able to watch shows even if they don't
learn of them until after they've been broadcast:
<http://www.dtg.org.uk/news/news.php?class=countries&subclass=193&id=1059>

     - Half-a-million DTT receivers (including 30,000 PC cards) were sold in
France in the first four months of DTT transmissions:
<http://www.dtg.org.uk/news/news.php?class=countries&subclass=0&id=1067>

     - In Australia, the number of DTT receivers sold to retailers and
installers as of the end of June was estimated at 920,000, and increase of
143,000 for the quarter:
<http://www.dba.org.au/index.asp?display=news&newsID=719>

     - There are now 76 models of set-top DTT receivers in Australia from 25
brands, starting at a recommended retail price of A$99 (US$76). Of those, 24
from 17 brands are HD, starting at A$499 (US$382):
<http://www.dba.org.au/index.asp?sectionID=18>

     - There are also 26 models of integrated DTV sets from seven brands,
starting at A$1099 (US$841). Of those, five from two brands are HD, starting
at A$6599 (US$5048):
<http://www.dba.org.au/index.asp?sectionID=78>

- On Thursday, a delegation from Samsung came to my apartment to test a new
prototype 8-VSB demodulator. With a high-gain, directional antenna sitting on
the inner windowsill and pointing straight across the street, we were able
reliably and stably to receive every signal we could see on a spectrum
analyzer, which, now that more stations have moved to the CBS antenna on the
Empire State Building, was more than ever before.
     The antenna didn't seem critical. A simple loop in roughly the same
location also worked. A few feet inside the room, however, performance was
worse. We could get a few stations with the antenna at a set-top location but
by no means all. A surprise to me was that WABC-DT was one of the more
difficult, as it had previously always been the easiest to receive. It may
have something to do with the front end of the prototype, which was a simple,
inexpensive, single-conversion tuner. WABC-DT is on channel 45, and WNYW-DT is
on channel 44. I'd rank this unit above those non-LG boxes using the LG
5th-generation chip, but not as good as the LG box with the LG 5th-generation
chip (which could get all but one of the stations with a set-top antenna, and
the one it couldn't get was located in New Jersey). Things are certainly
improving.

- The 2006 International Consumer Electronics Show call for papers expires
Friday:
<http://www.cesweb.org/attendees/conferences/speakers/default.asp>

- The July 2005 Late Edition of Gary Merson's HDTV Insider Newsletter describes
tests he performed that showed that more than half of consumer 1080-line HDTV
displays offered no more than 540 lines. All of the Hitachi, JVC, and Pioneer
sets he tried passed his test, as did all of the Toshiba-manufactured Toshiba
sets. In another story, his visits to retailers, like my analysis of their
ads, shows fewer integrated DTVs than the Federal Communications Commission
(FCC) tuner mandate would suggest:
<http://www.hdtvinsider.com>

- Based on figures from CEA (which were recently revised), sales to U.S.
dealers of non-H/DTV television sets for the first 28 weeks of 2005 were down
8.4% from the same period in 2004; my ten-week running average was down 11.3%.
For the first 29 weeks, they were down 9.4%, and my ten-week running average
was down 16.8%.
     Sales of so-called "Digital Televisions" to U.S. dealers for the 28th week
were 56,743 units, for the 29th week 61,935, and for the first 29 weeks
2,115,509 (compared to 10,830,650 for sets not called "digital" by CEA). For
the three weeks in a row, the number of so-called "Digital Televisions" sold
for the week was less than the number sold for the same week last year. That
negative-growth continues into figures I'm not permitted to release yet.
     "Digital Televisions" (most of which are HDTV displays without
DTT-reception capability) accounted for about 16.3% of the TVs (not counting
plasma or direct-view LCD) sold to U.S. dealers through the 28th and 29th weeks
this year. It may be worth noting here what that means. About 84% of the
non-plasma, non-direct-view-LCD TVs sold through the 29th week this year were
still plain non-H/DTV direct-view TVs with picture tubes. The last time CEA
released numbers allowing the LCD and plasma TVs to be included, they raised
the "digital" percentage to about 25%; I suspect it is higher now.
     To qualify to CEA as a "Digital Television," a display need only be
capable of dealing with at least 480p; it need not be capable of either
receiving digital signals or displaying them. Devices actually capable of
receiving DTT signals are still a small fraction of those numbers.

- Ads for set-top DTT receivers: They've finally come down in price. DirecTV
units were available from Circuit City, CompUSA, and Ultimate Electronics, and
CompUSA also had a Samsung.

- The ads - Readers have asked how to get hold of some of the non-national
retailers, so look for their phone numbers at the bottom of the memo.
     Again, at least some of the model numbers in the Center City ad appear to
be wrong.
     There appear to be some price breakthroughs this week. DirecTV has
dropped the price of its DTT receivers. The H10 was just $199.99 at Circuit
City. The Vizio P42e plasma TV was just $1199 at PC Mall.
     Ultimate has an LG 44-inch DLP projection TV with what, to me, is a new
model number, but it does NOT have integrated DTT-reception capability.
