     Here are some very efficient (low-administrative-cost) relief
organizations (all have four-star ratings from CharityNavigator.org):

- Follow-ups:

     - Voom - In a Securities and Exchange Commission filing on Monday,
Cablevision reportedly said the costs of shutting down Voom could run as high
as $130 million but they expected to recoup the money from their sale of assets
to EchoStar:
<http://www.tvweek.com/news.cms?newsId=7947>

     - Blu-ray and HD DVD -
          - Warren Communications News reported Wednesday that "all hope [is]
not lost" yet. They also reported that Panasonic denied boycotting the meeting
in Cannes. The story is no longer on their site:
<http://www.warren-news.com/>
          - After HD DVD announced a triple-layer disk to get them to 45 GB,
TDK came up with quadruple-layer 100-GB Blu-ray disks -- with a 72 Mbps
transfer rate:
<http://www.twice.com/article/CA607083.html?display=Breaking+News>

     - High-speed DTT reception - Visson Technologies says their VT1031T will
receive DVB-T at speeds up to 150 km/hr (about 94 MPH) with diversity reception:
<http://www.digitimes.com/systems/a20050531PR218.html>

     - Broadcast flag -
          - Many news outlets report that the Motion Picture Association of
America will not push for broadcast-flag authorization in the proposed DTT
legislation:
http://www.eff.org/deeplinks/archives/003619.php
          - A report prepared by the Congressional Research Service reportedly
suggests it could violate the Constitution:
<http://www.cedmagazine.com/cedailydirect/2005/0605/cedaily050602.htm#4>

     - The draft DTT legislation - According to the Congressional Research
Service, in addition to the Barton and Stevens proposals, there are four DTT
bills already introduced. One would require 700 MHz spectrum delivered to
public safety, another would rescind the Federal Communications Commission
(FCC) DTT "tuner mandate," a third would create "minimum public-interest
requirements for multicast TV channels," and the last would add to educational
and informational multicasts. The first two are reintroductions from the
previous Congress. The full Broadcasting & Cable story requires a paid
subscription:
<http://tinyurl.com/75o7d>
     In a related story, Broadcasting & Cable reported today that Qualcomm is
making deals to get stations on channel 55 to drop analog. The deals are
contingent on government approval, which was NOT forthcoming when KJLA tried to
drop its analog service early. The full story requires a paid subscription:

     - Society for Information Display convention -
          - Here's another story:
<http://www.digitimes.com/displays/a20050606PR207.html>
          - The iFire display reported last week is electroluminescent, not
field emission.
          - Peter Putman's comments are now available on the web:
<http://www.hdtvexpert.com/pages/fmj.htm>

     - July 1 -
          - Manufacturers are continuing to announce tuner-free monitors
instead of DTT-reception circuitry to comply with the mandate. Here's a story
from This Week in Consumer Electronics (TWICE) about Westinghouse dropping
analog tuners to avoid the mandate:
<http://tinyurl.com/b29qk>
     This one is a little different. It's a story from TWICE about Akai
offering near identical models at about the same suggested prices with either
integrated DTT reception or no tuners. The ones with no tuners will cost
retailers less. I wonder which they will promote:

retailers, so look for their phone numbers at the bottom of the memo.

     - May 1 - The FCC updated its lists as of June 2:
          - 1686 stations (98% of the new total including mandated and DTT-only
stations) have received DTT construction permits or licenses, and 1508 are
transmitting some DTT at some power level:
<http://www.fcc.gov/mb/video/files/dtvsum.html>
          - There has been no change in the listings of the 40 ABC, CBS, Fox,
and NBC stations due on the air May 1, 1999; 38 are fully licensed, and two are
operating on temporary authority:
<http://www.fcc.gov/mb/video/files/dtvstat.html>
          - There has also been no change in the 79 stations in markets 11-30
due on the air November 1, 1999; 72 are fully licensed, and seven are operating

          - Here's a chart of the current status:
<http://www.fcc.gov/mb/video/files/dtvonairsum.html>
          - This is supposed to be the list of the 698 stations operating at
full power, either fully licensed or on program test authority. I still can't
see it on my browsers. If you have the same problem, switch the URL extension
to .doc, and you can get it as a Word file:
<http://www.fcc.gov/mb/video/files/dtvonair.html>
          - This is supposed to be a list of the 810 stations operating at low
power under on temporary authority:
<http://www.fcc.gov/mb/video/files/dtvstas.html>

- The FCC finally also released the figures for analog stations as of the end

- International H/DTV news:

     - UK regulator Ofcom offers "Planning Options for [the] Digital
Switchover." The 34-page document calls for moves to 64-QAM and 8k COFDM to
provide more capacity for such purposes as HDTV:
<http://www.ofcom.org.uk/consult/condocs/pods/statement/statement.pdf>
     It also calls for serving the WHOLE UK population, including the 1.5%
(about 375,000 households) not served by analog TV:
<http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/tv_and_radio/4599881.stm>
     Intellect, the UK trade organization similar to the U.S. Consumer
Electronics Association (CEA) called the report a "leap forward" and were
disappointed only "that Ofcom has failed to recommend support to consumers with
legacy products with 2k-only receivers...." This report is from Public
Technology:

     - In Australia, there are 133 models of widescreen TVs from 15 brands,
ranging from A$699 (US$536) to A$39,999 (US$30,668); nine of those from four
brands are said to have DTT-reception circuitry, starting at A$1449 (US$1111);
69 from 11 brands are said to be HD, starting at A$1599 (US$1226). Only one is
said to be both HD and DTT; it costs A$10,624 (US$8147):
<http://www.widescreentv.com.au/>
     A different list has 22 integrated DTT receivers from seven brands
starting at A$1449 (US$1111) and five HD from two brands starting at A$6999
(US$5366):
<http://www.dba.org.au/index.asp?sectionID=78>
     Digital Broadcasting Australia also lists 76 DTT set-top receivers from 25
brands starting at A$129 (US$99), 21 of them 15 brands HD starting at A$399
(US$306):

     - A draft statute in Taiwan would offer tax incentives and subsidies for
DTT equipment, would set an analog cut-off at the end of 2010, and would
require DTT-reception circuitry in sets larger than 29 inches by 2006, larger
than 21 inches by 2007, and all others by 2008:

"Image quality issues continue to nag TVs including the decoding and
de-interlacing of SD/HD video." The story will be on their site until tomorrow
morning:
<http://www.warren-news.com/>

- CEA has not yet released to me sales figures for week 20.

- Ads for set-top DTT receivers: I'm aware of only the DirecTV units at Best
Buy and Circuit City. I haven't been made aware of any ads for any other
set-top receivers for quite some time

- Ad confusions: Circuit City correctly called the Samsung HLP5063W a
"monitor" but labeled it as "HD Built-In." J&R advertised the HP PE4240N as an
"EDTV monitor HD-ready." Video & Audio Center said the Mitsubishi WD52327 was
digital-cable ready.

- The ads - Readers have asked how to get hold of some of the non-national
retailers, so look for their phone numbers at the bottom of the memo.
     The model numbers are so hard to make out in the Center City ad that I
might have gotten them wrong (but I'm pretty sure they got at least one wrong,
too).
     Note that Computers & Electronics Warehouse is offering a Samsung 42-inch
