     Here are some very efficient (low-administrative-cost) relief organiza=

- Follow-ups:

     - NPD 17-inch LCD price drop - That was actually for computer monitors=
:
<http://tinyurl.com/6sgs9>

     - Number of U.S. ATSC receivers - Last week I offered Greg Tarr's stor=
y in TWICE saying there were three million. Ted Hearn reports in Multichan=
nel News (and CEA, the Consumer Electronics Associayion, has confirmed to m=
e) that 1.5 million of those were integrated, which means the other 1.5 mil=
lion are STBs. Total "DTV" factory sales through the end of 2004 were 16.1=
 million. The full story requires a paid subscription:
<http://www.multichannel.com/article/CA513178.html?display=3DPolicy>
     In view of CEA's reporting "over 1.2 million" devices capable of recei=
ving ATSC on February 23 of last year and a million digital-cable-ready set=
s in 2004 (all integrated with ATSC-reception capability) and in view of th=
e "tuner" mandate kicking in last July, I find the figure for integrated se=
ts surprising (on the low side -- and the resulting set-top box figures sur=
prising on the high side). All of the numbers are for factory sales.
     In a related story, In-Stat's report "Got HD? High-Def TV Service Now =
In Over 10 Million Homes" says that many worldwide are actually receiving H=
D, with four million of them in the U.S. (up from 1.6 million a year ago):

     - The UK Secretary of State for Culture Media and Sport has release th=
e Report of the Digital Television Project. This is the introduction:
<http://tinyurl.com/3k4hr>
     This is the full 41-page report, which seems to cover everything from =
sales figures to ecological impact of increased current draw of digital rec=
eivers. It notes that 18 million VCRs might have to be replaces, and that =
households might have to pay between 40 and 200 UKP not counting installati=
on costs between 50 and 150 UKP. It also discusses consumer advisory notic=
es about their TVs and VCRs not working. The only thing missing is a hard =
analog shut-down date:
<http://tinyurl.com/5p8zf>

     - Thanks to a large infusion of government funds, the South Africa Bro=
adcasting Corporation expects to have everything necessary to shoot the 201=
0 World Cup in HD. But they might not be able to broadcast it that way unt=
il 2014, if then. A different organization, Sentech, does the transmission=
, and they seek R300 million (US$47 million) from the government for a netw=
ork. Multicasting is said, in this story, to be the biggest advantage of D=
TT:
<http://free.financialmail.co.za/05/0318/technology/atech.htm>

     - China is reportedly responsible for 55% of the world's TVs, and abou=
t 62% of China's output is purchased domestically.  Half of China's top-10 =
electronics companies are in the TV business:
<http://www.atimes.com/atimes/China/GC25Ad04.html>

     - Here's an update on DTT in Ireland:
<http://home.eircom.net/content/irelandcom/topstories/5276922?view=3DEircom=
net>

     - DTT transmitters for a pilot project in Romania are on order:
<http://www.tvbeurope.com/Headlines.htm#News4>

- At the USDC/Needham Display Industry Investor=E2=80=99s Conference, Insig=
ht Media's Chris Chinnock said average sale prices are actually increasing.=
  Returns are said to be due, at least in part, to the fact that analog sig=
nals look "awful" on the new sets:
<http://www.hdtvexpert.com/pages/consortiumsan.htm>

- Normally, I would simply report the main item in this CEA news release, b=
ut another sentence throws a different light on it. The main item is that =
CEA conducted a survey that found that almost half of consumers plan to mak=
e their next TV HD. But then there's this sentence: "Nine out of 10 adult=
s are now aware of at least one term used to refer to high-definition telev=
ision, such as 'digital television' or 'HDTV'":
<http://www.ce.org/press_room/press_release_detail.asp?id=3D10719>

- Based on figures from CEA, sales to U.S. dealers of non-H/DTV television =
sets for the first eight weeks of 2005 were down 16.1% from the same period=
 in 2004. For the first nine weeks, they were down 11%. My ten-week runni=
ng average was down 15% at the end of the eighth week and 12.1% at the end =
of the ninth.
     Sales of so-called "Digital Televisions" to U.S. dealers for the eight=
h week were 125,104 units and for the ninth 77,608. For the first nine wee=
ks they were 687,821.
     "Digital Televisions" (most of which are HDTV displays without DTT-rec=
eption capability) accounted for about 16.9% of the TVs (not counting plasm=
a or direct-view LCD) sold to U.S. dealers through the eighth week this yea=
r and 16.8% through the ninth. It may be worth noting here what that means=
.  About 83% of the non-plasma, non-direct-view-LCD TVs sold through the se=
venth week this year were still plain non-H/DTV direct-view TVs with pictur=
e tubes. The last time CEA released numbers allowing the LCD and plasma TV=
s to be included, they raised the "digital" percentage to about 25%; I susp=
ect it is higher now.
     To qualify to CEA as a "Digital Television," a display need only be ca=
pable of dealing with at least 480p; it need not be capable of either recei=
ving digital signals or displaying them. Devices actually capable of recei=
ving DTT signals are still a small fraction of those numbers.
