I believe this is because the total number accounts for how many of the
original monsters you need to kill to get 100% kills on the map. Increasing the
number could be confusing for those attempting to get an accurate reading on
how close to 100% they are. I also don't believe lost souls are counted
(someone would have to clarify this to be true though).
