I believe that the Vanilla Doom sound curve (and what we currently have) is 1024 units from the player and that it is 2048 units for ZDoom. This is a requested feature by some of the competitive ZDaemon players who are looking to move their league to Odamex in the future. Their desired behavior was actually reverted from Odamex years ago and is documented in Bug 40.
