We've always noticed that at a certain distance from our approaching car, kestrels will bolt from the lines. I have a fond memory of driving back from Eugene on a beautiful Sunday morning on Peoria Road with a bald eagle seemingly flying (coasting?) right along side me. I would have been doing around 55 mph.

We also have one crow (out of a big murder that show up at my feeder to eat peanuts etc) that will stick around while I'm in the yard. The rest are quite testy & take off. But, he knows me I'm sure, as well as a particular Steller's Jay. I talk to both of them, but don't know if they hear me. Can birds hear human voices? My husband, who is an agronomist, also had a crow land on his shoulder in a field one time. Scared the bejeebers out of him since it was so unexpected. We figured he had been someone's pet.

Th Steller jay has been hanging around for a couple years now; has had the most unusual call (almost like a piping sound). He comes in the morning and starts "yelling" waiting for me to bring more peanuts if the squirrels have emptied the feeder. Has me well-trained.

At about 4 a.m. last Wednesday we were awakened by a begging Great Horned Owl with a response of hooting by another. Don't know if it was a young one begging or a female, I would guess the former.
