Christie and I (hurriedly) birded a few spots today (11/27/13), all in the Illinois Valley. Cold and foggy most of the time.
"highlights":On Lake Selmac, several hundreds American Coots and Ring-Necked Ducks (more than I believe I've ever seen of both species on Lake Selmac in the past). Otherwise, saw expected duck species and 2 Lesser Scaup and the female Common Goldeneye (that Russ Namitz reported on 11/18 - probably same bird). A Horned Grebe was present (along with an estimated 35 Pied-Billed Grebes).
At the Cave Jct. Water Treatment facility, a Marsh Wren, a Virginia Rail, larger numbers than usual of Green-Winged Teal (~38), about 25 Wood Ducks, a Northern Shoveler -female, etc.
At "Martin's Dairy" off Rockydale Road, a large Canada Goose flock (foraging in the field) of about 250 geese and I couldn't locate any cacklers or white-fronted geese in the flock. 2 adult Bald Eagle were roosting in a hardwood snag next to the river (East Fork Illinois). Lots of chinook salmon carcasses available.
