The gull flock in the clover field between I-5 exit 228
(Corvallis/Lebanon) and 99E has been very large all winter. Intrigued, Dave
Irons drove there with Shaween Finnegan and I on Jan. 31 and we found many
hundred MEW GULLS. There were also above average numbers of RING-BILLED GULLS
and CALIFORNIA GULLS but very few pink-foots indeed. The case was quite the
opposite in early December. Despite the low pink-foot count (two or three score
out of maybe 700) there was a WESTERN GULL in the flock. Three separate teams
on the Tangent Count recorded Westerns this year. After three hours and sifting
through 1100 gulls on the nearest part of the Corvallis CBC circle to Tangent I
found a Western. They seem to have been well represented in the mid-Valley this
winter.
Gull numbers in general seem super high. But the wet weather has kept
worms close to the surface. Several recent winters have been dry and gulls
scarce.
