We walked out the Amazon canal, south side trail, from the Fir Butte bridge to check out the mud flat and shorebird situation at the outflow. There were few shorebirds on the flats too far to get to and those included in the list were in or near the canal. A pleasant surprise was finding three immature Sharp-shinned Hawks perched on bare snags near the base of Fir Butte. For some time, they were carefully studied while they perched and turned on the bare branches. There should be no doubt about their nesting in the valley.
