Folks,

I would like to gently ask folks who post bird sightings to GIVE DIRECTIONS to the location of the bird. Please write them for the person who is not familiar with the location, even if it is well-known to local birders. If you put the directions in the original posting, folks don't have to send a request "Where is that?" and loose time waiting for a reply.

Some birders like to go look for birds that are reported (chase). It is distressing if a bird is reported and the directions are ambiguous. One drives some distance to the location, directions in hand, only to find that there are TWO white houses, or that the roads have different names. You spend your afternoon looking, only to find out later that your were at the WRONG white house. The sun sets on your time without success and you can't spend another day looking in the right place.

In the case of the COMMON GRACKLE on Wireless Rd. I learned from Mike Patterson that
a) the sheep pens referred to are at the NW end of the Wireless Rd loop
b) the horse corral and the house with the feeders are at the south end of the Wireless Rd loop The grackle is in a flock of Brewer's Blackbirds that roams all over the area.

In the case of burns that central Oregon birders search for woodpeckers, one would be hard pressed to know where the GW burn, the Pole Creek burn, or any other burn is located without having directions, since these names are applied by fire personnel without reference to road directions.

Thank you.

Good birding,

Paul T. Sullivan
