The first of the resident (nesting) pairs of sandhill cranes arrived on Ladd Marsh, Union County, yesterday. This is just 2 days earlier than my previous early records of February 19 in both 2010 and 2013. Other years they have arrived within a fairly tight window of February 20 – 26. Yesterday’s arrivals were 9 in number and included one of the birds we banded as an unfledged colt last summer. This youngster is still with its parents and will likely stay with them for a couple more weeks before they encourage it to go elsewhere so they can nest again. M.
