Saturday evening I visited the Tangent eagle roost and counted 43 Bald Eagles
in the trees. As the light faded, around 20 Northern Harriers flew in, one by
one from the west, and landed in the field below the roost. As the last few
Harriers flew in, Short Eared Owls started to appear, flying about 50 feet in
the air and then heading west to hunt the fields. I did not stay long enough
to count the owls.
Sunday morning, Jim and I drove an area south of Highway 20, east of I-5 and
bordering the town of Brownsville, We counted 48 adult and sub-adult Bald
Eagles and one Prairie Falcon that was in a tree just north of the intersection
of Sand Ridge and Webber. Not as many sheep in the valley it seems, as in
previous years, and they are a healthy bunch as we only saw 8 eagles on the
ground feeding on one carcass. Several ewes had 3 lambs. Those lambies are so
darn cute.
