I spent the day with Lowell Franks cleaning his and any other's bird boxes in
the Summer Lake State Wildlife Refuge. We started at Anna Reservoir and
proceeded south as far as the Barn. We cleaned 45 boxes and got GPS readings
for each (almost).Due to the contents, we found way over half of the boxes were
successful in raising young determined by the poop content. It looked like all
the used boxes were used by swallows. Last month we also cleaned another 53
boxes on the main loop road and two of the dikes with about the same results.
I picked Lowell up in Ft. Rock and we drove to Christmas Valley for Breakfast
before heading for Summer Lake. By the time we got about one mile south of
Christmas valley we had counted over 100 raptors, mostly Red-tails and a few
Ferruginous. We found one 3 segment irrigation pivot in a cut alfalfa field
that had 16 Red-tails sitting on it. In all the years I have been doing Raptor
Surveys in the area, I have never seen this many birds on one pivot.
