For those of us stuck at home in the Valley during all the exciting sea-watching and storm-chasing : ( .... I have been predicting that the first calm mostly sunny day following this rainy windy stretch we've been having would produce the first SANDHILL CRANE flights of the fall over my SW Portland yard, expecting that they've been bottled up north of here by the weather. 11:00 a.m. is when the first flocks usually appear over my place on promising October days. Sure enough, at 11:21 a.m. today a flock of 32 cranes tried to sneak by me, silently, but I caught them just before they disappeared behinds the trees ... and so then they relented with a few telltale bugles. Hoping for more.... If you're on a crane flight path, keep your eyes & ears open today and the next several days as weather conditions allow.
